This is a Traditional Portuguese rooster made from aluminium and hand painted in Portugal. It's not a Portuguese house if at least one of these roosters is not present in the home. The rooster is said to bring luck, fortune, and love to the house. The roosters may look the same but each is uniquely painted and therefore the one you'll get will be a one-of-a-kind! The legend of this famous bird goes something like this:

LEGEND OF THE BARCELOS COCKEREL

Back in the middle ages, in the small town of Barcelos, it was discovered silver had been stolen from a landowner. Theft was considered to be a serious crime and so the hunt was on for the thief. It was declared their suspect was a man from neighboring Galicia, who was passing through Barcelos on a Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to complete a promise. Despite protesting his innocence, he was sentenced to death by hanging.

In a bid to avoid this terrible fate, the pilgrim begged to see the judge who had passed the sentence. The authorities honored his request and took him to the house of the magistrate, who was holding a banquet with some friends. Affirming his innocence, the Galician pointed to a roasted cock on top of the banquet table and exclaimed, "It is as certain that I am innocent as it is certain that this rooster will crow when they hang me." Needless to say, he was laughed out of the room and dragged off to the gallows, but the judge decided he would push aside his plate and not eat the rooster just yet.

Later, while the pilgrim was preparing to be hanged, the roasted rooster stood up on the table and crowed just as the Galician predicted! Realizing his error, the judge ran to the gallows, to try and prevent the innocent man from being hanged. He arrived only to discover that the Galician had been saved from hanging thanks to a poorly made knot in the rope. It was then that the man was freed and sent off peacefully.

It was from that day on that the Barcelos Rooster would be forever known as the national symbol of Faith, Justice, Good fortune and Love!
